Dr. father Mihovil (Mijo) Sučić was born on June 26th 1820 in Livno. In 1837, he enters the Franciscan order and begins his studies in philosophy and theology in Venice. After finishing his studies, he continues to study medicine and surgery in Padua. The Holy See permits him, before returning to the Franciscan province Bosna Srebrena, to practice medicine, but only if his work is for free. With an abundance of love, he worked and helped the people by reuniting his Franciscan mission with his work in medicine. He applied contemporary methods of treatment by using medical literature, but also prepared medicine by himself from various therapeutic herbs according to old records from "ljekaruša“ (recipe collections that were hand-written and instructions about treatments that were written and used by the Franciscans). Returning from Šujica, where he was sent to help a woman that was giving birth, father Mihovil got ill. He died of pneumonia on March 3rd 1865 in the Franciscan monastery Gorica in Livno where his legacy is protected up until this day, from which special value has medical literature and medical equipment which he used. The community hospital in Livno carries the name of Dr. father Mihovil Sučić. (Željka Šaravanja) The Croatian Post Ltd.
