Croatian Post Mostar has issued the commemorative stamp issue “Myths and flora 2024.” In a block with the motif of the hajduk Mijat Tomić and and munika, an endemic pine.
Mijat Tomić is a famous Croatian leader of hajduks who fought against Turkish rule during the Ottoman Empire. He was born in Gornji Brišnik at the beginning of the 17th century (1610?), died in Doljani near Jablanica on the feast day of Saint Elijah, July 20, between 1656 and 1659. His parents died early and Mijat was raised by his uncle. When he grew up, he entered a lease with Bey Kopčić. He had a reputation as a hero with whom no one in the Duvno region could compete. After challenging an Arab, who had threatened to bey and the people, to a "megdan" (fight), he defeated and executed him. Because of his heroic deed, Bey Kopčić gifted him a meadow called Jabuka and the honour of being his banner bearer at his wedding. The Turks did not like that, especially since Mijat beat them in stone throwing and other games, so they decided to kill him. Upon learning of their intention, Mijat fled to Vran Mountain and gathered a band of hajduks consisting of 30 to 40 people.
Another tradition tells that Mijat killed the Duvno qadi Suzica, who had appropriated the Jabuka meadow, his grandfather's land. He died after the betrayal of his godfather Ilija Bobovac from Doljani near Jablanica, who had invited him as a guest. He was killed either by an Arab slave or an azeb (gendarme) by hitting his throat with a pewter bead. Cousin Marijan tried to take the wounded Mijat to Vran, but Mijat died under the Sovići Gate, where he was buried in the Pošćeci field.
